What is calcium hypochlorite?
Calcium hypochlorite, also known as perchlorine and with the chemical formula Ca(OCl) 2 , exists as a white crystalline solid, granules or odorless tablets. Calcium hypochlorite is effective as a bleach. Perchlorine is used in industrial and domestic laundry and water purification due to its cleaning and bleaching properties.
Properties and characteristics of calcium hypochlorite
This material from a mixture of lime is obtained and calcium chloride and is used for whitening or purifying water. It is also used in the formulation of disinfectant sprays, herbicides and detergents. Calcium hypochlorite is generally available in the form of white powder, tablets or flat plates. This product dissolves quickly in water and releases oxygen and toxic chlorine gas due to heat.
It is not flammable, but can act as an oxidizer for combustible materials and may with ammonia react explosively , amines, or organic sulfides. This substance is known as the best disinfectant for swimming pools. It is used as a bleaching agent when mixed with lime.

There is a possibility of combustion when this substance reacts with organic compounds or oils, due to its high degradability. The reaction of calcium hypochlorite with water is an exothermic reaction and produces heat.
- This substance is available in two forms: powder (more common) and tablets
- In powder form, this compound has a pH of about 11 and in tablet form it has a pH of about 9.
- It contains about 65-75% chlorine
- It has no pool stabilizer
- Due to the presence of calcium, it increases the hardness of water.
Production of calcium hypochlorite
There are two main ways to produce this substance:
- The calcium method is based on the chlorination of crushed lime with the direct use of chlorine gas according to the following reaction:
2Ca(OH) 2 + 2Cl 2 → Ca(ClO) 2 + CaCl 2 + 2H 2 O
- The sodium method is also based on the reaction of sodium hypochlorite with the product of the calcium method to remove undesirable calcium chloride , which is a side product of the calcium method:
CaCl 2 + 2NaClO → 2NaCl + Ca(ClO) 2
Today, the sodium method is used more. In both methods, the production of Ca(ClO) 2 and water is directly dependent on the chloro-alkali unit where chlorine gas is produced.
The difference between sodium and calcium hypochlorite
Both sodium and calcium hypochlorite are chlorinated mineral compounds that are generally used for disinfection purposes. Hypochlorite anion is highly active against bacteria, fungi and algae sludge formation and neutralizes them.
The above product is relatively stable and has good antiseptic properties like sodium hypochlorite. Among the differences between these two substances, we can point to the higher amount of chlorine in calcium hypochlorite (around 70%). In places that have tens or hundreds of millions of gallons of water, sodium hypochlorite is usually used for dechlorination. In smaller water systems that have a capacity of less than 5 million gallons, calcium hypochlorite is used for dechlorination.
Since Ca causes water to become harder, calcium hypochlorite is not used in hard water. In high hardness waters, the sodium type of this compound is usually used. As a result, before using chlorinated compounds, water must be tested for chemical compounds, pH, etc.
Applications of calcium hypochlorite
Due to its cleaning and bleaching properties, this product is used in industrial and domestic laundries. It is also used as a disinfectant in pool, lake and drinking water and waste water, synthesis of chemicals and bleaching of paper pulp. In the following, we will discuss how this combination works in each of these applications :
Pool water disinfectant
Due to the presence of chlorine in the structure of perchlorine, it is widely used as a disinfectant for swimming pool water. In general, chlorine compounds have disinfectant properties. This substance can destroy all kinds of fungi and bacteria in water.

Disinfectant and fungicide
HClO molecules are neutral and very small. These properties allow them to easily diffuse through the bacterial cell wall. This mode of action reduces the oxidation potential of the cell and inactivates triosephosphate dehydrogenase (an enzyme that is essential for glucose digestion). Inactivation of this enzyme will cause the loss of functionality of the microorganism and eventually lead to its destruction.
Bleaching – laundry
The reactivity of hypochlorite at low temperature will lead to optimal bleaching of fibers and save total energy consumption. In the presence of hypochlorite, washing the fibers at 40 degrees Celsius will destroy the microbes. We are all familiar with a detergent called Vitex, but did you know that this substance is sodium hypochlorite, which is produced by Perchlorin? You can see the production reaction of this substance below:
Na 2 CO 3 + Ca(OCl) 2 —> 2NaOCl + CaCO 3
As can be seen in the reaction above, the reaction between sodium bicarbonate and the above product can produce Vitex, which has a high whitening power.
Bleaching paper pulp
Color removal by reacting with the remaining lignin in the pulp.
Perchlorine benefits
- It is very strong and to reach the desired amount of chlorine, a small amount of this product is retained.
- It works fast
- It does not damage the pool and the equipment in it.
- Durability and easy access
- It is very affordable and in terms of active chlorine content, it is one of the cheapest types of chlorine compounds you can buy after sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine).
MSDS and Hazards of Calcium Hypochlorite
- Hypochlorite anion is dangerous to aquatic life, but fortunately contact between the two is rare. The ions in the water coming out of the houses are destroyed by the reduction reaction and turn into chloride ions. Industrial waste water is also sent to purification units before being released into the environment, where excess ions are removed.
- Sometimes dilute solutions from some industrial units such as power plants find their way into the environment, which are considered practically safe due to their low concentration.
- One of the concerns about the use of sodium and calcium hypochlorite in the treatment of drinking water and waste water is the formation of trihalomethanes. Some trihalomethanes have been shown to have carcinogenic effects, and the approved allowable amount for drinking water is 100 ppm.
- Sodium and calcium hypochlorite may remain on some food products when used as disinfectants. However, these residues do not have harmful effects on human health.
How can we be exposed to these substances?
- We can be exposed to very small doses of this substance if we use bleach and household disinfectants.
- In pools where this substance is used to eliminate bacteria and pathogens.
- through drinking water
- Workers who are engaged in bleaching in textile and paper factories deal with a higher dose of these substances than others.
Can calcium hypochlorite be harmful to humans?
The toxicity of this substance in the first stage comes from its hypochlorite part. If a very small amount of household bleach that contains 3-6% of this substance is swallowed, it will cause irritation of the digestive system. But if you swallow a large amount of this substance or industrial bleaches that contain 10% hypochlorite or even solid perchlorine, corrosion will occur along with bleeding in the digestive system from the mouth to the stomach and may cause death.
Global Market
It is expected that between 2016 and 2024, this material will experience a growth of about 3.4 CAGR. The biggest use of this compound will still be water purification. North America and Europe are the two regions that have controlled the market of this substance. In Asia, the demand for water treatment has improved and it has been able to experience an improving market for this product.
It should be noted that the global market for disinfectants, including chlorinated disinfectants, is increasing due to increasing concerns about the spread of infectious diseases. Another fundamental reason for the growth of the market for these substances, especially perchlorine , is the increase in population and the increase in the need for clean water and the lack of fresh water in densely populated areas, mainly in Asia.
In the figure below, you can see the consumer market of sodium hypochlorite. A similar market is predicted for calcium hypocalcite.

The market growth of this compound is strongly influenced by disinfectants. According to forecasts, the market of this combination will grow by 0.7% during the years 2019-2024. In the food industry, sodium and calcium hypochlorite is used as a disinfectant for food industry equipment. Asia has a significant share in the market of this product because it has a large population and according to the information provided. The largest global market of the product is pool disinfection, which includes about 37% of its total consumption.
