Harms and Dangers of Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC)

MSDS-of-PAC PDF

Poly Aluminum Chloride (Poly Aluminum Chloride) is a chemical substance that consists of aluminum, oxygen, hydrogen and chlorine elements. Polyaluminum chloride is also known as aluminum chloride hydroxide and is abbreviated as PAC.

This substance is a yellow solid and soluble in water with the chemical formula AL 2 (OH) n CI 6 .

This chemical is found in the form of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) 28% and polyaluminum chloride (PAC) 30%.

PAC has many industrial uses, but it is mainly used in flocculation processes in water treatment industries.

Types of polyaluminum chloride

This material is available in the market in two industrial and sanitary grades:

  • Industrial PAC (sewage)
  • Oral or drinkable PAC (sanitary)

The important role of potable polyaluminum chloride is in the clarification of water, but the industrial or sewage type of this material is less powerful and does not have the ability of this clarity.

Application of polyaluminum chloride

Polyaluminum chloride in water treatment

Polyaluminum chloride is a very useful chemical . which is mostly used for water purification. Other uses include:

  • PAC is widely used in drinking water treatment due to its high antibacterial effects.
  • It is used in the flocculation process in wastewater treatment.
  • It is used as coagulant in paper and pulp industries.
  • This substance is used in cosmetics and personal care industries as an ingredient in deodorants and antiperspirants.
  • PAC is also used in the oil and gas industry due to its emulsifying properties and phase separation efficiency.
  • This substance is used in the production of other chemicals.
  • Application in textile industry
  • Application in food industry
  • This material is used in the construction industry for quick coagulation of cement

Is polyaluminum chloride safe?

Using polyaluminum chloride can be dangerous because it is a corrosive substance. Inhalation, ingestion or skin contact may cause injury.

According to the chemical safety sheet (MSDS), inhalation of PAC 28% and PAC 30% can cause mucous membrane irritation and skin and eye irritation with redness and swelling.

In addition, PAC consumption can cause mouth and stomach irritation. Proper storage and disposal of polyaluminum chloride should be considered to avoid any unwanted effects.

How is polyaluminum chloride made?

Which countries produce polyaluminum chloride in bulk?

The consumption of polyaluminum chloride has increased significantly worldwide, especially in developing countries. Therefore, its huge demand has led to the jump of its manufacturing companies. The main manufacturers of PAC are:

  • china
  • India
  • South Korea
